Fanrealm is again pleased to spotlight a most worthy charity concert – From The Heart 3. It is being staged for the third year in a row at the Millennium Forum in Derry, Northern Ireland. The inspiration for the concert was a grieving mother looking for a way to honor the memory of her much loved son.

From The Heart 3 also strives to raise awareness of the increasing number of youth senselessly lost to suicide. Eamonn Johnston was lost around this time four years ago. These concerts and those to come are certainly a fitting legacy to his memory. Don’t miss this fantastic night’s entertainment and the opportunity to support this worthy cause.

Belfast five piece Cashier No. 9 will cap off the summer by headlining the Small But Massive Main Stage at Glasgowbury Music Festival 2011.

With their David Holmes produced debut album To The Death Of Fun getting its official release on June 20th, the alt-rock outfit will celebrate in style by headlining the Sperrins’ summer celebration.

Also recently signed to Bella Union Records, home to acts such as Midlake and Fleet Foxes, 2011 looks like being the year for Cashier No. 9 to soar.

Also confirmed for the bill this year are some of the finest up-and-coming and established acts from throughout Ireland including The Answer, Rainy Boy Sleep, LaFaro, Mojo Fury, Foy Vance, Axis Of, Furlo, The Wonder Villains, More Than Conquerors, Rams’ Pocket Radio, Silhouette, The Rupture Dogs and Swanee River.

While 2011 will also see the continuation of the festival’s electronic feel with exclusive sets from legendary NI producer Phil Kieran and local superstar Boxcutter who also join the mix thanks to the support of Deep Fried Funk DJs who take their customary spot also.

More acts will be announced in the coming days and weeks while decisions regarding the completed line-up are still on-going.

Glasgowbury 2011 takes place on Saturday 23rd July and tickets are on sale now from hmvtickets.com and from HMV stores throughout Ireland.

Glasgowbury have announced plans for its return in July with tickets for the event going on sale from Monday 18th April.

The ‘Small But Massive’ festival will celebrate its 11th year at the heart of new music when it returns this summer.

With over 50 acts set to be spread across their five iconic stages, the Draperstown based event blew out the candles on its tenth birthday last year with another sold-out capacity event.

With the local music scene buzzing from recent successes, Glasgowbury will hit the ground running over the weekend of Saturday 23rd July this year to honour the best new music from throughout the island of Ireland.

In order to provide the best and most accessible festival experience for all, the local event have announced that they will keep tickets at last year’s prices of £30 (festival only) and £40 (festival and camping).

Tickets for the limited capacity event go on sale from 9am on Monday 18th April from hmvtickets.com, HMV stores around the country* and from a number of local retailers.

Announcements regarding this year’s line-up are set to be announced in the weeks following the tickets going on sale.

Starting with In The End this album gets your undivided attention. It’s not just great music, though it is surely that. These songs will really speak to you on a deeply personal level. They run the gamut of the human experience – life, love, loss and going on. I absolutely love the hauntingly beautiful Roma but I think Crazy Days sums up album fantastically. It is far better to rise to the challenges of life than to allow yourself to be victimized by them. There is a great range of songs here that will appeal to both acoustic and rock fans.

All the songs were written by Marty Logue and Tony Cregan. The album was produced by Paul Casey and Tony Cregan. Listen to the samples in the widget and I think you will agree that this one belongs in your collection. Marty is currently working on the next album so there is plenty of more great music to look forward to.

He has also been the subject of a short documentary film shot around the north coast of Ireland, Portstewart and Coleraine University. (See video below.) It was directed by Alan McCracken, camera work by Kelvin O’Donnelle and sound by Sinead Darragh, three talented film markers from Coleraine. Gareth is definitely a performer to keep your eye (and ears) on.

Glasgowbury is fast becoming one of the best small festivals in Ireland and the UK. Many of the acts who have appeared at this small but massive event have gone on to national prominence. Glasgowbury is not just a festival but a year round organization dedicated to helping local musicians hone their craft. As someone who appreciates the music from that area I am indebted to them for all they do for the industry and the musicians. To learn more about the Glasgowbury Music Group go to their website.

2011 will be the 11th year for this festival which takes place at Eagle Rock near Draperstown every July. There are several stages and the music is continuous throughout the festival. Cashier # 9 This is a real up and coming band. You can find them at facebook here If you are in NI look for them at the Nerve Center in Derry tonight and the Cellar Bar in Draperstown on Sat the 4th.

The 1930s is another great band from NI. This one is unique in that it has 3 front men. Jonny Solari, Andrew Cameron and Thomas Hamilton were all front men for other bands but eventually came together as The 1930s.

AJENDA has a really unique sound. Jen’s strong vocals will take this band a long way. You will be hearing a lot more about them in the future. Circles is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head but you’re happy to have it there.

Colenso Parade is a band I first discovered at the NI charts site. I have liked everything they’ve done. They have a great sense of fun and irreverence about life that is infectious. This is another band that reminds me of the early Beatles.

Paddy Nash & The Happy Enchiladas is another of my all time favorites. They have a lot of great music, including the Christmas songs featured in Monday’s post, at their website http://paddynash.co.uk/ that you can listen to and some you can download for free. This widget needs to be updated a bit. I may have to get my badgering hat on.

Mickey Coleman traveled for the first time to Chicago to participate in the Irish American Heritage Center’s 2nd Annual iBAM! Celebration. He also appeared in a Chicago pub the night before and while reviewing a second appearance a day later may seem repetitive, these two performances were absolutely nothing like each other. Having only Nancy Spain and Mickey Coleman in common; their settings, their song lists and their audience were as different as night and day. Mickey’s concert for iBAM! was all about his songs, his lyrics, his music and pleasing his audience. And please them he did!!!

Mickey’s seated concert has an intimate feeling, a bit like being in the family room with a friend strumming a guitar and explaining the lyrics he’s about to sing. While he once again opened the show with Nancy Spain, the majority of the playlist this evening were Mickey’s own self penned songs, many from his albums but several new ones that will be included in his next album, as yet without a release date. He’s certainly raised the bar to the next level with these new songs, the melodies and lyrics blending perfectly, giving deep meaning and emotion to his narrative. The new album will surely be a great success.

It seems Mickey always has a story to weave about the inspiration for writing his songs. Culdaff is no exception, and before singing this touchingly sad song, he explained about thinking of all those folks leaving long ago never to return, regretting their decision and aching for home.

Mickey also previewed a new and as yet unnamed song about emigration and forever leaving home, family and friends to reunite only “in heavens room.” The melody and poignant lyrics blend together perfectly, bringing the story to life. He explained his inspiration for this one was his own family leaving Tyrone for America around 1900 and knowing they were leaving forever.   

He next spoke of sitting with a blind man 70 years old who explained how he loved to sleep and dream because in those dreams he could still see the colors of his wife’s eyes and her smile. The man’s story inspired Mickey to write Blind Man’s Dream. A video of this performance follows below, its lyrics telling the blind mans story perfectly.

At the conclusion of the concert, Mickey sang one of my very favorites from Carefully Crafted, Soldier Soldier, to honor a young soldier he met earlier in the evening. He was in uniform and in a wheelchair, wounded and just back from Afghanistan. A touching and wonderful conclusion to Mickey’s most outstanding concert.  

I can say without hesitation that Mickey Coleman delivers an exceptional evenings entertainment in concert and although he’s heading home soon, he will be back. When he returns, don’t miss him in concert. It is a very special evening.
