Halloween Music Friday

Here it is Friday again and the Friday before Halloween. So some appropriately holiday themed videos are in order this Music Friday. Halloween or All Hallow’s Eve, was originally celebrated as Samhain, part of the Gaelic calendar marking the end of summer. This holiday has a lot of spooky aspects to it but is actually New Year’s Eve on the Pagan calendar and therefore a great excuse to party!

So we are celebrating with some old favorites here. Many of these videos have the lyrics included. Go ahead and sing along no one will hear you Happy Halloween, Blessed Samhain and Happy New Year.

Happy Halloween

And so it is that the night approaches when the veil is thin between the worlds of the living at the dead. There will be ghosts and ghouls and things that go bump in the night flitting just outside our peripheral vision very soon. In fact, there’s one now. Or was it? Were they really there? Did we really see them? If they are really there, the safest thing to do is to get down and party with them. Nothing raises the spirits of the spirits like a great party. You haven’t lived till you’ve danced with a Banshee, rapped with a mummy, had a tall wet one with a Vampire or belted out Karaoke tunes with a werewolf. So sit back, take up a goblet of blood or your favorite brew and enjoy these videos for Spooky Friday. Happy Samhain or All Hallow’s Eve or what every you call the most fun holiday of the year. My broom is all pimped out, got my black cat strapped in and I am ready for action. Have a great weekend!

This song sure fits the Halloween mood. It was filmed around Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. Great music too. The song is called Darkness Creeps. If you look hard enough you may even spot a ghost or two.

How Halloween Began:

One of the most fascinating tales about Halloween is how and why it began.

Celebrating our fear of ghosts and goblins began 2,000 years ago with the Celts, people who lived in an area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France.

The Celts celebrated the birth of the new year on Nov. 1, which they associated with the end of the harvest and the death of the old year.

They believed that on the night before the new year, the ghosts of the dead returned to walk the streets and create mayhem, including playing practical jokes and damaging the crops.

They also believed that during the Oct. 31 holiday of Samhaim, named for their Lord of the Dead, otherworldly spirits returned to earth to help their holy men predict the future.

Because they knew little of the science needed to understand the natural world around them, the Celts found the prophecies of their Druid priests comforting.

During this time, an Irish legend developed about a man named Jack who was denied entrance to Heaven when he died because he was a miser. The devil didn’t want Jack, either, so he was forced to roam the earth holding a lantern until Judgment Day.

The Irish, wishing to avoid Jack’s ghost, carved out turnips and potatoes and placed candles inside for protection. When the Irish people immigrated to America, they brought along the tradition. After seeing pumpkins for the first time, they replaced other vegetables and our jack-o’-lantern tradition was born
