July Festivals

July and August are the height of festival season and that’s when the really big festivals are. Lots of fabulous acts to see along with other activities for the whole family. The Scottish festivals generally also have highland games which are a must see – staggering feats of strength and agility all performed in kilts! Many festivals offer traditional, celt rock and contemporary Irish and Scottish acts.

There isn’t better way to take in a lot of music for one low ticket price. It’s is more important than ever that we support our local festivals if we want them to continue. In times like this sponsors drop off and venue rents shoot up leaving the festivals in a real financial bind. So make plans to attend as many as you can and get involved. Volunteer at your local festival. You’ll make new friends and have more fun than anyone has a right to have under the guise of work. Here are some of the festivals taking place next month. If you know of one that should be included here please send me the details and link and I’ll be happy to add it.

Go and enjoy these festivals. The music will be top notch and it’s even possible you will find beer and/or Irish whiskey to enhance the experience. Designated driver rule should apply. The festival will want you to attend next year too.

June Festivals

Here it is the end of May already. How did that happen? June launches us into no holds barred festival season and there are some really great ones happening that you won’t want to miss. Attending a festival supports your local Celtic community and is a great way to see a lot of great bands in one location for a very reasonable price. There’s a lot to do at festivals. Some have Highland Games. Even if you’re not an athlete they’re fun to watch. There are often whiskey tasting events, sheepherding demonstrations, dance exhibitions, kids’ activities and lots of great food and beer to be had. And there are also many vendors booths which provide some great shopping (my own personal athletic event ). So get yourselves to a festival. You’ll become a regular and come back year after year. Better yet, volunteer and get involved. You’ll never enjoy working at anything else as much.

Go and have a great day and help people at the same time. Festivals are still the best way to take in a lot of acts/bands for one reasonable price. Supporting your favorite festival insures that the festival will have the funds to continue bringing you great music and other events. You can learn about your culture and heritage plus there is always shopping and interesting food to sample. It’s a great way to spend a day or a weekend. March is the time of the year the festival really starts warming up right along with the weather. With St Pat’s falling in March everyone is in an Irish kind of mood so it’s time to party. Celt Rock Sampler II

It’s Music Friday again and it will be Celt Rock this week. That seems to be a big favorite around here. So much so that we will be doing Celt Rock again next week. Because of the holiday here in the US next week, we will be bumping Music Friday up to Wednesday so there will be days and days of chances to stop by and listen between all the traditional activities like turkey and football and, much more my style – shopping! So enjoy these great Celt Rockers and look for even more next week. It’s not like anyone can get enough of it, anyway. With the coming of Fall, the 2010 Festival season is winding down. The autumn months are often actually the best time to go to one. The weather is cooler which makes walking around the festival grounds (especially in a wool kilt) much more comfortable. The traffic is a wee bit less hectic. The back to school shopping is done. It’s the perfect time to hit a festival. They are still the best entertainment value for the dollar and they are something the whole family can do together. I can’t believe May is almost over. Where did it go? June is just around the corner and the festival season is going strong. Here are some great June festivals that you have to take in if you can. Canadian Celts – Part 1

With the worlds’ eyes on Canada due to some sort of sporting event, I thought it would be a good time to focus on some really great Canadian bands. Some you will know but others may be new to you. They are all well worth a listen. I actually found so many that I will need to do a second post on this topic to prevent people from becoming so overwhelmed by choices that his/her head spins. Never a good look.

Enter the Haggis – This group has been billed as the hardest working band in the business. They certainly tour extensively and will undoubtedly come to a venue near you sometime this year. They have a huge fan following but there is always room for one more Haggishead. When you go and see them during this tour be sure to bring a donation of dry goods with you (non perishable food, clothing etc) to support the ETH COMMUNITY INITIATIVE. Donations will be collected at their merchandise table and given to the local food banks and shelters in all the places they play to help out the needy . This regard for others is just one reason this is one of the most popular bands going. POGEY is a folk rock band from the hamlet of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Their blend of traditional and contemporary sounds have been bringing both Canadian and US audiences to their feet for over 5 years. Watch for them in the Halifax area or on the festival circuit. Great Big Sea is an other Folk Rock band that arrived on the scene in 1993 and have been thrilling audiences ever since. They hail from Newfoundland but tour in the US also. Glengarry Bhoys are a Folk Rock band from Glengarry, Ontario Canada. They are a great Celtic rock band that will really get your blood pumping. This band tours a good deal wand will be appearing at many festivals this year. Claymore is a Celtic rock band from Calgary, AB. They create a unique sound with influences from traditional Celtic Music, Classical and even a wee touch of the cowboy all blended together in an exciting, fast paced sound with the occasional ballad thrown in for balance. The Town Pants is a Folk Rock band from Vancouver, B C. They generally gig in the Pacific Northwest but are fan favorites at several big festivals as well.
