Happy Birthday to Us ~ Music Friday ~ Part 2

So the week is winding down and our celebration is coming to a close for this year. We have started making a few changes to the site and more are in the works. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to vote in our new poll and let us know your favorite place to listen to live music. The poll is in the left hand side bar. As you scroll down to listen to today’s music you will see it. Also we have a brand new “Like” system in place. This one is one you have probably seen on many other sites and is connected to Facebook. When you like a post it will appear on your Facebook page as a link. Help us get the word out so we can draw more attention to the music.

Spotlight Music Friday ~ The Music For Life Tour

Since it’s summer and in some places the heat has killed off several brain cells or at least has them taking some time off. So, rather than post a lot of music on Fridays, for a while we will spotlight just one artist. This week we are shining the light on one of our favorite young singer songwriters.

Gareth Brannigan and few of his friends recently accepted the challenge if trying to play in every pub in Northern Ireland. The reason they did this was to collect money for The Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. They would arrive at the pub and play for the patrons and then pass around a little plastic bucket to take up the collection. There was no fancy tour bus involved. This was a grassroots, sleep-in-a-van effort. But the Music For Life Tour was very well received and the band didn’t kill each other over the course of tour. Sounds like a raging success.

Here are what some of our favorite performers are up to.

Andrew Huggan has just gotten the support role at Skerryvore’s King Tut’s Gig in Glasgow. Thrilled for Andrew. He was the one who told me about Skerryvore to begin with.

Siobhan Day will be performing at another L E D event at McHugh’s Bar on April 21st, along with Orla Lynch, The Vires, Nathaniel McCauley, & Pete McCauley. Only £4 and all proceeds go to Chernobyl Childrens Appeal NI Ltd Great night of entertainment to help a good cause. What’s not to like? For more info check out the event page at Facebook here

Fighting For Jane will also be doing a charity event on Thursday, April 14 · 8:00pm – 11:00pm at Whelans(upstairs), Wexford St, Dublin, Ireland Also on the bill Birdhill Co-op. This event is a fundraiser for Focus Ireland. For more info check out the event at Facebook here

Cat Malojian will be playing at La Boca, 6 Fountain Street, Belfast April 10th at 7:30 £5 at the door. For more info check their website here.

Cashier No.9 is playing at Club Fandango at 229 Great Portland Street in London tonight at 8 PM. You can also hear a radio interview with the band here They will also be doing a G Session at the Cellar Bar in Draperstown on May 21st along with ELSPETH

Coast will be on the Karin Ingram’s Sunday Getherin’ show on Radio Borders on 24th April. They will also be featuring cuts from the new album. Also they have announced that their album launch show at the Inverness Ironworks on 7th May will now be supported by Donald Macdonald (& The Islands)

Gareth Brannigan Young Songwriter on the Move

Gareth Brannigan is a young singer/songwriter from Antrim, NI. He purchased his first guitar at the ripe old age of 12. His father taught him a few chords and he was off and running. Within a few short years he had earned a spot in his father’s band. Still in his early 20s, Gareth has been a semi finalist in the U K Songwriters Contest, released two EPs and is very much a part of the hot music scene in Belfast.

He has also been the subject of a short documentary film shot around the north coast of Ireland, Portstewart and Coleraine University. (See video below.) It was directed by Alan McCracken, camera work by Kelvin O’Donnelle and sound by Sinead Darragh, three talented film markers from Coleraine. Gareth is definitely a performer to keep your eye (and ears) on.

Say It Anyway ~ by Gareth Brannigan

Say It Anyway is Gareth Brannigan’s second EP. While I really enjoyed his first EP, this one totally blew me away. I really liked his acoustic sound from the first EP and he does throw in one acoustic bonus track here too. His style and technique have really matured with this album. These are songs that you find yourself singing along with but they are much edgier than a typical pop song.

The theme of this EP is the struggle of young man searching for his place in the world. It reflects the hope and confusion involved with setting out on your own. Each song will speak to you whether you are in that place right now or just remember when you were. I really liked all the songs and would be hard pressed to name a favorite but it would probably be We’ll Hit The Road These songs all complement each other beautifully. I’ve been listening to this EP for four days solid and still enjoy the songs immensely. Like any great music, the more you listen the more nuances you hear. Gareth Brannigan is definitely an up and coming singer/songwriter and you will be hearing a lot more about him in the future.

More Music From Northern Ireland

Music Friday again and, as promised, this time it will be solo acts from Northern Ireland. Again, there were too many for one post so even more will be popping up very soon. In the meantime, enjoy these great singer/songwriters. They all have a lot to say and they say it in some great songs. Some of these are old favorites back by popular demand and some are new to the site. Happy Birthday to Us!

Don’t worry we won’t sing. We’ve posted some widgets that belong to people who can sing and they do it quite well. This has been an amazing year. We started out with a simple idea – to have a place to collect the great music we either have loved for ages or discover on myspace, ReverbNation and other such sites. We were very pleasantly surprised when other people turned out to enjoy them as well. We have over 62,000 hits now which tells us a lot of other people like our little niche of the music world, as well.

Some of the people who began the journey with us have moved onto other things but we have a core group of writers who are very dedicated to finding and posting info about Celtic, Irish and Indie music, the people who play it and the people who enjoy it. I think there are a lot of people who love this genre, many who have yet to find us but for those who already have this is your party too. To celebrate we are posting the ReverbNation widgets for many of the bands who have made this year the success it was and also as a representation of the types of music we love. There are a few we would like to have added who do not have ReverbNation widgets. We have already badgered two of these bands into getting them and if you don’t have one – you could be next.

So sit back, grab some virtual stout (or a real one from your own fridge) and party with us till the cows come home. Silly hats are optional but you know you would look truly awesome in one so go ahead a wear one. We won’t tell. A wise Blaggard told me that all birthday celebrations were to start on Friday and last for a week. Sounds good to me. To year two!

Happy Arthur’s Day

The day we’ve been waiting for is finally here! There are Arthur’s Day celebrations going on the world over. There will be lots of music and Guinness flowing today. We have put together our own completely unofficial line up of entertainment for you to enjoy with your pint at 17:59. It’s a virtual battle of the bands that everyone wins. Not that there is an actual price either for the bands (isn’t that always the way?) but we are showcasing a lot of the acts that we have featured throughout the nearly a year we’ve been on line and they are all winners to us. We have put a link under each widget that will lead you to a page that is selling the music of the singer/band. You can also become a fan of the band by clicking on that section of the widget as you listen to the music. Many of today’s featured bands are newer acts so help them become established and build a fanbase.

Listen to and enjoy all the music. They are posted in no particular order although I did put Oracle first because some horrid woman badgered David McClean into giving up a couple hours of his Sunday to set this page up in ReverbNation so I could use his widget for this post. I don’t know who that woman could have been, possibly my evil twin. There are actually some other singers/bands I would have liked to have included but they didn’t have a widgets. These widgets are great ways to have your music go viral so if you are a band that doesn’t have one, you should really get one. It only takes an hour or so to sign up at ReverbNation and set a page. It will really help your music get exposure and avoid a possible badgering from some horrid woman…..just sayin’….

Solo Indies

I have to admit I am a real fan of bands but I also like many solo performers. Here is a nice variety of some of my favorites. I think you will enjoy them also.

Eamon Ireland

Eamon Ireland is folk singer from Limerick, Ireland. His soft voice and superior story telling techniques make his songs unforgettable. They stir the soul and sooth it at the same time. There is a magical quality to them that few other songwriters can bring to their music. Mick Flannery

I have been a fan of Mick’s for some time now. He is from County Cork, Ireland but has also played in the US. He won the U.S. Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee and they know a little something about great songwriting in Nashville so you don’t have to take my word for it. Mick’s songs have a gravely sound and an earthy realism to them that touch a nerve with his listeners. Mick’s music is available through ITunes

Gareth Brannigan

We have featured Gareth here before but since he has recently released his second EP, Say it Anyway, I thought it was time to showcase him again. Gareth is from County Antrim in Northern Ireland. He is a young singer/songwriter but his songs are more mature than you would expect from someone his age. There is a very acoustic feel to his music and his lyrics speak to the listener in a very personal way. His new EP is not yet on cdbaby but I will include a link to the first one Walk With Me

Following Bob

Following Bob is the stage name of Norwegian rock/pop singer Vegar Nesset. Vegar studied music at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. He has performed in several stage shows and has performed in a few tribute bands and has written songs for other acts.

Marty Logue

Marty Logue is a talented singer/songwriter from Derry in Northern Ireland. He also has an acoustic rock style music. His debut album As Good a Time as Any was produced by Paul Casey, who is also a very talented singer/songwriter. I couldn’t find Marty at ReverbNation but you can hear samples of his music at his myspace page http://www.myspace.com/martylogue It is well worth the trip over to myspace to hear him.
