September is a great month for festivals. The weather is a little cooler and nothing ushers in a change of season like some great Irish Music. Festivals have a lot of entertainment. There are generally fabulous dance shows, great pipe bands. Some festivals also sponsor runs and fun contests like Reddest Hair, Greenest Eyes etc. Many of these festivals will fall over half pat’s weekend which marks the halfway point to St Patrick’s Day and a wonderful reason to celebrate with Irish beer, Irish Music and possibly some Irish whiskey. So find one near you and get yourself to it. You’ll be glad you did!

July and August are the height of festival season and that’s when the really big festivals are. Lots of fabulous acts to see along with other activities for the whole family. The Scottish festivals generally also have highland games which are a must see – staggering feats of strength and agility all performed in kilts! Many festivals offer traditional, celt rock and contemporary Irish and Scottish acts.

There isn’t better way to take in a lot of music for one low ticket price. It’s is more important than ever that we support our local festivals if we want them to continue. In times like this sponsors drop off and venue rents shoot up leaving the festivals in a real financial bind. So make plans to attend as many as you can and get involved. Volunteer at your local festival. You’ll make new friends and have more fun than anyone has a right to have under the guise of work. Here are some of the festivals taking place next month. If you know of one that should be included here please send me the details and link and I’ll be happy to add it.

Go and enjoy these festivals. The music will be top notch and it’s even possible you will find beer and/or Irish whiskey to enhance the experience. Designated driver rule should apply. The festival will want you to attend next year too.

With the coming of Fall, the 2010 Festival season is winding down. The autumn months are often actually the best time to go to one. The weather is cooler which makes walking around the festival grounds (especially in a wool kilt) much more comfortable. The traffic is a wee bit less hectic. The back to school shopping is done. It’s the perfect time to hit a festival. They are still the best entertainment value for the dollar and they are something the whole family can do together. Here are a few that will take place this month. If one of them is in your area – go and enjoy yourself. It will only take one to get you hooked on them.

Don’t Give Up On Summer Yet

Summer has been beastly in most places this year and lots of us are more than ready for the cooler temperatures autumn brings. But summer is not just a season. It’s a state of mind. It’s the time of year our inner child still looks forward to, anticipating freedom. Remember those wonderful days? Well, don’t just remember them – celebrate them even if you can only work in one evening or one day or even a weekend. Here are some festivals happening around the US and some gig info for some great bands. Go ahead and pamper that inner child and find yourself a bit of summer freedom before winter sets in and we have snow to deal with.

One month from today is Arthur Day and we will come up with some way for us all to celebrate it. In the meantime, check out this list and find something fun to do.

Celtic Bands from Pennsylvania

We have a lot of readers from Pennsylvania. It stands to reason that if there are fans there, it would also be a state where great Celtic Music is made. Here is a sample of some of that great music. Enjoy!

Barleyjuice is a great band from Southampton, PA. They have 5 studio albums and a double cd set to their credit. Members are: Kyf – vocals/guitar/accordion/bagpipes, Swanny – vocals/mandolin/bouzouki/bagpipes, Billy – fiddle/vocals, Carbomb – whistle/banjo, Eric – bass/vocals & Gregor – Drums.

Burning Bridget Cleary is an award winning band from Harleysville, PA They have two very successful cds out. Members are: Rose Baldino-Fiddle/Vocals, Genevieve Gilespie-Fiddle/Vocals, Lou Baldino-Guitar/Vocals, Pete Trezzi-Dhjembe

Ceann is a band from Pittsburgh. If you love the comical irreverence of Gaelic Storm and the Saw Doctors you will flip for Ceann just like I did. It’s not often a band can pull off both music and comedy expertly but Ceann does it. The members are: Patrick Halloran, Jeff Hoag, Scott Taylor, Tom Snodgrass, Greg Sloan, Dan Rusnak, Brian Fitzgerald

Killmaine Saints are a band from Mechanicsburg, PA. We recently featured them when we reviewed their cd but they are certainly a great band from PA so we will add their widget here too. To read the cd review click here

May really kicks off the festival season. There are a couple of really great ones this weekend so without further ado here are some great festivals that will be held this month.

Congratulations to Burning Bridget Cleary!

Highlander Radio has announced the winners of the 2009 Celtic Radio Music Awards. These awards are voted on by the listeners of and members of CelticRadio.net

The top album of the year is Everything is Alright by Burning Bridget Cleary. This is the second album from this great high energy band following their debut album Catharsis which was released in 2006. If you have never heard them you are missing a real treat. Two of the songs from this album also made song of the year in the individual song awards. Soldier, Soldier (my personal favorite BBC song to date) won in the Contemporary category and Three Set won in the Jigs and Reels category.

Other individual song winners were Murphy’s Ashes by Enter the Haggis from the album Gutter Anthems in the Celtic Rock category; Caledonia by Celtic Thunder from the album Act Two in the Traditional category; The Queen’s Piper Medley by Jim McRae from the album Global Gathering in the bagpipes category; Raggle Taggle Gypsy by Celtic Thunder, also from Act Two, in the Roots Traditional category. Congratulations to all the winners.
