The Good, The Plaid & The Ugly ~ by Kilmaine Saints
This cd was waiting for me when I picked up my mail on Friday and I have been playing it ever since. This is one of the best Celtic Rock albums I have heard in – well practically forever. I was not familiar with Kilmaine Saints before this so I was happy to make their acquaintance. This high energy band hails from Mechanicsburg, PA and this is their debut cd. Like many great Celt Rock bands this one is fronted by an Irishman, Brendan “Duke” Power, from County Mayo. He and the other 7 Saints, Steve “The Handsome Lad” Murphy, Billy “The Butcher” Brown, Barry “Black Eye” Mills, Jon “Mulligan” Heller, Frank “Rev Fluffy” Aponte, Mike “McKnukles” McNaughton and “Lovely” Liz Mallin, are taking this great genre to a whole new level.
The cd starts out with Amazing Grace but soon launches into the band’s self penned theme song The Saints Are Up! Any thought you may have had of traditional Celtic Music is driven out of your head with this hard drinkin’, arse kickin’ song that really sets the mood for the rest of the album. There are a few other traditional songs like Leaving of Liverpool and Wearing of the Green but it is the original songs that really set this cd apart. They are, by and large, a rousing tribute to the Irish who made their way to American and then fought to make their way in America. Even though there are plenty of pipes and traditional instruments used here, this is NOT your granddad’s Irish music. It would be very hard to pick a favorite track as I really love the energy and master musicianship in all of them but if I had to pick one it would have to be Pog Mo Thoin just because it’s an expression I have long used with people I needed to say it to but couldn’t in a way they could understand the actual meaning.
So scroll down to the widget below and have a listen to it but I am betting anyone reading this already knows exactly what it means. Once you have listened to the songs click the buy now cdbaby link and get a copy for yourself. You will love it as much as I do.
