The Bridge by Enda Keegan

I really enjoy artists who can bridge genres effortlessly with their lyrics and melodies and so telling you about Enda Keegan is really an easy task for me.  I’ve been listening to The Bridge, Enda’s debut album, again and again for many months. Released September 1, 2008, it is an eclectic mix of songs, the majority self penned pop style. The others chosen from the many, many excellent contemporary Irish songs and writers whose lyrics tell stories of Ireland’s past and present.

A Co. Kilkenny, Ireland born singer, songwriter and musician, Enda now makes his home in New York City and appears in many of the local clubs there.  Effortlessly slipping from wee Irish pub storyteller into trendy club artist, Enda presents each of his songs with intensity and passion.  A fine example and one of my two very favorites on this album is New York City Morning, a sizzler certainly but also a touching narrative of shared experiences and love.

The other favorite of mine is With Grace. Written by Enda, With Grace tells the story of artist Grace Gifford, a young woman active in the Republican movement and Joseph Plunkett an Irish nationalist and a leader of the Easter Rising. They planned to be married on Easter Sunday 1916 but after the Rising, its leaders were jailed and sentenced to die by firing squad. Grace and Joseph were married in Kilmainham Jail’s chapel just hours before Joseph’s execution. While other songs have told this story, Enda’s poignant and touching lyrics rank right up there with those older and better known songs.

Enda Keegan is a brilliant lyricist and singer and an artist growing in popularity and distinction. The Bridge is one of the reasons. This is an outstanding album filled with wonderfully rich songs, all memorable. It is an excellent addition to any music lover’s collection.
